Episode 145 – A Potpourri Episode

In this episode, Da Prez Kris and yours truly, the Supreme Irreverend Doctor Randy Tyson, discuss a variety of pressing issues:

  1. Warwick University student union cancels a talk by invited speaker Maryam Namazie, citing butt-hurtedness. We propose a Golden Hemorrhoid Cushion Award be given in response.
  2. Bishop Fred “You-know-what” Henry writes on physician-assisted suicide and, as usual, gets everything wrong, while a BC bishop thinks abstinence is what will keep women from contracting HPV.
  3. Recently-unemployed bus driver Jesse Rau tries to cash in on his self-induced martyrdom by running for public office in the next federal election (any takers¬†on how many votes he’ll get?).
  4. As we approach the Halloween season the Calgary Journal has an interview with a local paranormal ‘research’ group.

Episode 144 – Chris and Jonn’s Excellent Interviews

Welcome to the Legion of Reason, podcasting a critical eye on a sometimes less than critical world! In this, the 144th installment of our humble audio periodical, we bring you two interviews. In the first, Da Prez Kris and yours truly, the Supreme Irreverend Doctor Randy Tyson, talk to screenwriter and author Chris Matheson about his new book taking a quirky and entertaining look at what it would be like to be God. Chris is best known for co-penning Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and its sequel,¬†Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, and has recently published The Story of God: A Biblical Comedy about Love (and Hate). In the second, the incomparable Nate Phelps and I talk with Christian-apologist-turned-atheist John Loftus about his upcoming book giving advice to budding Christian apologists on how to go about defending their faith. John, a Master’s graduate in theology from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and once ordained minister in the Church of Christ, apologetics and philosophy at various universities and after hitting the eject button on religion became a staunch voice for reason. In the aftermath of a crisis of faith he has written a number of books, beginning in 2008 with Why I Became an Atheist: A Former Preacher Rejects Christianity. This was followed by Why I Became an Atheist: Personal Reflections and Additional Arguments, The Outsider Test for Faith, an anthology titled The Christian Delusion: Why Faith Fails, The End of Christianity and following a debate tour with Christian apologist Randal Rouser co-authored with Randal God or Godless. November will see the publication of his sixth book, How to Defend the Christian Faith: Advice from an Atheist.

Episode 143 – All We Skeptics Need is Love

Here is the 143rd episode presented by the Legion of Reason, podcasting a critical eye on a sometimes less-than-critical world! In this installment, we discuss an interview with University of Calgary professor Patrick Finn who tells us in his new book called Critical Condition that critical thinking needs more love. We rip him a new one. From there we move on to the recent spate of bullshit masquerading as religious freedom in the workplace, and finish off with a recent opinion piece by our friend Lawrence Krauss on why scientists the world over should be militant atheists.
