In the 199th episode Feisty Twyla, Incorrigible Kris and yours truly, the Supreme Irreverend Doctor Randy Tyson bring you another potpourri of religious absurdity and even some science. First, researchers at the University of British Columbia put another nail in the coffin of liberation therapy for MS; Singaporean Amos Yee is granted asylum in the United States; In Catholic Watch, forget Ghostbusters! When there’s something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call? Exorcists! At least according to the Pope. More papal poppycock, this time Frank begs forgiveness yet again, this time for the Church’s involvement in the Rwandan genocide; forget the others that died in a natural disaster in Peru… the Catholic Register declares the survival of one woman a miracle! Staying with the Catholic Register, we give you their best headline of the year so far. And in Islam Inquiry, Iran’s Ayatollah Khamenei claims feminism is a Zionist plot. Of course it is. All those orthodox Jews are really empowering women by refusing to sit next to them on flights. In Pakistan, more atheist bloggers are arrested for blasphemy. And finally, University of Toronto professor Jordan Peterson’s invited speech at McMaster University was disrupted by regressive leftists, and we all know where we’ll find that – in the Regressive Left Files…
Welcome to episode 197 of The Legion of Reason Diversion for March 12, 2017! Co-host Christine and yours truly, the Supreme Irreverend Doctor Randy Tyson, are joined by guest co-host Paul Ens. In this thrilling installment topics range a wide gamut, including the following:
- A Montreal osteopathic school faces charges of practicing medicine without a license when undercover investigators pose as patients;
- Brampton mayor Linda Jeffrey says that those challenging a decision to remove restrictions on choice of prayer and sermons in a public school are engaging in “misinformation
and hateful speech”;
- In Comox, British Columbia, more than 80 doctors have signed a letter to the health region to establish a new hospice not in the clutches of Catholic health care institutions which would make medical aid in dying available as an option;
- In Denmark, a man burned a Quran and was charged with blasphemy after posting the video of the event to Facebook despite the law not having been enforced since 1946;
- In our regular segue Catholic Watch, Pope Frank urges Catholic not to have more children than you can bring up properly – sounds like the urges are the problem, Frank;
- Cardinal Collins, Bishop Crosby lash out at Justin Trudeau’s inclusion of $650M over 3 years to provide abortion and other services in the developing world;
- And in the Regressive Left Files, Charles Murray and others were assaulted by protesters at Middlebury College in Vermont;
- Not to be outdone by our American neighbors, student protesters at the University of Victoria in British Columbia accused Philosopher Peter Singer of supporting euthanasia and ableism.

What do we have for your listening pleasure this time? We have more on attempts by the Catholic Church to interfere with physician-assisted dying legislation, and one person outside of Quebec has availed herself of the option, with another in Toronto requesting an exemption from the current law. Catholic care givers in Vancouver and Edmonton have already revealed their intentions to refuse to comply with any request for assistance in dying should they arise. And that is despite the public funding of these sectarian institutions. In Australia, Cardinal Pell says that tales of a predatory priest was a sad story and not of much interest to him. Bishop Fred Henry is back. He can’t seem to stop writing about the new guidelines for dealing with non-traditional gender identities in Alberta schools and is stuck with the biological definition and Catholic teaching. CTV peddles nonsense yet again featuring holistic nutritionalist Julie Cove who says to heal you need to alkalinize your body. And finally, we have blasphemy stories from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Russia and Germany. But first, the so-called “Long Island Medium” Theresa Caputo is on a Canadian tour, including places of interest to two of my co-hosts.
Later on in this installment we discuss the recent Supreme Court of Canada decision striking down the ban on doctor-assisted suicide and you can bet our favorite kicking horse Bishop Fred Henry (http://www NULL.calgarydiocese NULL.ca/news-a-events/54-health-care-apostolate/1254-bishop-henry-on-the-supreme-court-decision-regarding-assisted-suicide NULL.html) and other alarmists (http://www NULL.thespec NULL.com/news-story/5327821-supreme-court-strikes-down-assisted-suicide-ban/) crank up the hyperbole in their collective belief that Soylent Green was a documentary; Henry makes a second appearance in this episode to tell us why he is NOT Charlie Hebdo (http://www NULL.calgarydiocese NULL.ca/messages-from-the-bishop/1252-we-are-not-all-charlie NULL.html); and a new poll on Albertans’ views on vaccines (http://calgary NULL.ctvnews NULL.ca/poll-shows-surprising-views-on-vaccinations-in-alberta-1 NULL.2223504) has been released. But first, while our very own Christine is in New York addressing the United Nations, the ever-feisty Twyla and yours truly, the Very Irreverend Doctor Randy Tyson, look at a new international initiative to eradicate the world of blasphemy laws (http://end-blasphemy-laws NULL.org/).
This week Kris and I have with us special guest Michael Nugent (http://www NULL.michaelnugent NULL.com/), chairperson of Atheist Ireland (http://atheist NULL.ie/). Michael joins us to talk about Ireland’s free speech-violating blasphemy law (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Blasphemy_law_in_the_Republic_of_Ireland), the upcoming referendum on said law (http://www NULL.theguardian NULL.com/world/2014/sep/30/ireland-referendum-blasphemy-law) and non-belief in his native country. This interview was done in conjunction with Atheist Alliance International’s Secular World Podcast. Enjoy!
Oooo, this is such a good talk! I never realized this, but our
notion of blasphemy has changed over the years. It used to mean giving
the finger to God; now, it’s treated as a personal attack (http://kenanmalik NULL.wordpress NULL.com/2012/01/29/beyond-the-sacred/). Thanks, Ophelia Benson (http://freethoughtblogs NULL.com/butterfliesandwheels/2012/01/too-westernized-secular-and-progressive-to-be-authentic/) and Kenan Malik (http://kenanmalik NULL.wordpress NULL.com/)!
