Episode 206 – Potpourri

Join us as we bring you our take on a number of news stories we consider within our purview. In this edition for June 18, 2017 we find that over half of Canadians believe that religion is a force for harm and we wonder what the hell is wrong with the rest; a new creationist dinosaur museum opened this weekend in Innisfail, Alberta where no expense regarding historical accuracy was spared, including a laser tag facility themed with an ancient city being invaded by dinosaurs; in Ontario, a court rules that students no longer have to provide a reason for opting out of religion classes in Catholic schools; and in The Regressive Left Files… indigenous peoples of some 189 countries petition a United Nations committee to make cultural appropriation illegal. Lastly, we look at lawsuits from both pro and con sides of medical assistance in dying in Canada that can only be traced to crappy federal legislation. But first, welcome back Twyla!

Episode 166 – Potpourri episode

Welcome to the Legion of Reason Diversion, podcasting a critical eye on a sometimes less than critical world! In this, the 166th edition we see the greatest scientific minds in Canada tasked with answering one of the great questions of our time: Is broom technology destroying the game of curling? Who says blue-sky research isn’t useful? Catholic constitutional lawyers say the darnedest things! They’re so cute! And from the Regressive Left Files we have not one, but TWO portfolio folders. In the first we find Milo Yiannopoulos yet again at the center of controversy, this time at DePaul University in Chicago where Black Lives Matter protesters disrupt his talk as an invited speaker. The second contains the results of a recent poll on how students think speech that offends them should be dealt with. But before we get to those titillating topics, it’s convention season and we have to talk about Imagine No Religion in Vancouver last weekend and the American Humanist Association’s meeting in Chicago.

Episode 158, Pt 3 – The Regressive Left, With Guests Melissa Chen and Alishba Zarmeen

Welcome once again to the Legion of Reason, podcasting a critical eye on a sometimes less-than-critical world! In this, the 158th edition, Da Prez Kris, Feisty Twyla, the incomparable Nate Phelps and yours truly, the Supreme Irreverend Doctor Randy Tyson are joined by Melissa Chen and Alishba Zarmeen as we play “complete the following” to the statement “You might be a regressive leftist when….” The term ‘regressive left’ was popularized by Maajid Nawaz to describe “well-meaning liberals and ideologically driven leftists” in Great Britain who naively and “ignorantly pandered to” Islamists and helped Islamist ideology to gain acceptance. But it goes further than this to invade seemingly every aspect of social justice and we’ll speak to each in turn.

This is the third and final act of our discussions of the regressive left. In parts one and two we spoke with Melissa Chen and Alishba Zarmeen about the attempts of the regressive left to subvert traditional feminist ideals, along with attempts to stifle discussion of Islamism through accusations of Islamaphobia. In this part, we take on the topics of racism and cultural appropriation.
